Where and how did you celebrate the 1st of August 2024?!

We would like to share with you these beautiful scenes on the Vierwaldstättersee last night, right next to the Auslandschweizerplatz in Brunnen, Canton Schwyz!

Did you know Switzerland's path to independence was a gradual process that occurred over several centuries.

1291: The Swiss Confederation was founded by three cantons (Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden) signing the Federal Charter of 1291, which is considered the birth certificate of Switzerland.

1499: Switzerland gained de facto independence from the Holy Roman Empire after winning the Swabian War.

1648: The Treaty of Westphalia recognized Switzerland's sovereignty and independence from the Holy Roman Empire.

1848: The Swiss Federal Constitution was adopted, establishing the modern Swiss federal state.

So 1291, 1499, 1648, and 1848 are all significant milestones in the country's journey towards becoming the independent and wonderful nation it is today!

Today, on the 1st of August, we celebrate the National Day of Switzerland! 🇨🇭 It marks the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291, when three cantons—Uri, Schwyz, and Nidwalden—came together on the historic Rütli meadow, pledging to defend each other against external threats.

Did you know? The Rütli Oath symbolizes unity, independence, and freedom, forming the foundation of what we know today as Switzerland!

As we gather with friends and family to enjoy fireworks, parades, and delicious Swiss treats, let us remember our rich heritage and the beautiful diversity that makes our country so special.

📍 Calling the picturesque Mooketsi, South Africa, home, Francois works at a company that cultivates and exports fruits and vegetables, surrounded by the breath-taking diversity of nature, from lush rainforests to expansive savanna plains.

🏞 While embracing the beauty and opportunities in South Africa, Francois also speaks of the value of Switzerland’s stability, security, and natural beauty. He fondly recalls swimming in the Swiss lakes, a luxury not possible in the North of South Africa due to the presence of crocodiles, large snakes, and hippos. 🌍

🤝 Joining YPSA was a natural choice for Francois, drawn to the opportunity to connect with fellow Swiss youth abroad and engage in discussions about Swiss news, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.

🇨🇭 Actively participating in Swiss culture, Francois and his family are integral members of the Swiss Club Far North community in Limpopo, organizing events and gatherings, and cherishing their annual visits to the Vierwaltstättersee to reconnect with his family.

💼 With a diverse array of interests ranging from theology and economics to marketing and logistics, Francois brings a unique perspective to the YPSA board. As a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church and a dedicated member of ZZ2 Farming team, he finds joy in serving others and contributing to his community.
